Why you should attend the Winter Society Fair on Gather Town

Are you new to Cape Breton University (CBU) and want to connect with like-minded students? One of the best ways you can go about doing that is by joining a society. The CBU Students’ Union (CBUSU) has several societies, which cover a wide range of topics, from creative writing to dance.
Every term, there is a Society Fair, where you can meet active societies and get to know more about them. If you feel there’s a society that matches your interest(s), then you can join it right away! But this term’s event is unlike anything before.
Due to the spread of COVID-19, the event will be held virtually, but that won’t make it any less fun. After all, Gather Town is an interactive platform where you can move around like it’s a real-life fair!

To get more information about the fair and what you can expect on Thursday, Caper Times spoke to Breagh Clements, the Society Coordinator at CBUSU. She compared it to the Fall Society Fair and how, despite the circumstances this time around, students can expect similar experiences to previous fairs.
“Students can expect a fun virtual platform to replace the in-person society fair this year. Students are able to create a character, name the character, and walk around a virtual room, similar to how the Fall Society Fair went,” Clements said.
“Students will be able to walk up to each societies' table and ask the executive any questions they may have.”

She also spoke about why it’s important for students to join societies, and that if you don’t find something you associate with, there’s always an opportunity to bring forward your idea by establishing a new society.
“It's good for students to join societies so they can connect with like-minded individuals. With over 20 societies this year at CBU, there is something for everyone! If you don't see a society that piques your interest, you can start your own. Societies have different fun events throughout the year, and they are a great way to escape some stress from school,” she added.
If you wanted an extra initiative, there are also prizes to be won at the event!
So, make sure that you take some time out and attend the virtual fair at 11:00AM AST on Thursday, 27 January 2022. To find the link to the event, keep an eye out on this page.
