‘Om Namah Shivaay’ to be chanted in Cape Breton University
Motivate Canada, which is a non-profit organization that empowers youth through sports and recreation, is hosting a wellness seminar March 23rd at CBU. Curtis Brown, who is pursuing his Bachelor of Community Studies, is the seminar coordinator. In order to facilitate the seminar, a sum of $2000 was donated by Motivate Canada. This seminar focuses on mental wellness, yoga and meditation as a way of relieving stress.
Speaking with Caper Times ahead of the event, Curtis tells us “I have suffered from mental illness and I used the internet to search for ways that can make me feel better. This brought me in touch with meditation, [and] I have been practising meditation since then. I do some breathing meditation that I will be teaching in the seminar. This has helped me a lot in living the present moment. One mantra that I can relate to the most is ‘Om Namah Shivaay’. It helps me gain inner peace and would like to share it with people who are not aware of this. I use a ‘mala’ that has 108 (which is a mystical number in Hinduism) beads of ‘rudraksha’ and a bracelet.”
Additional guest speakers will share their knowledge with participants of the seminar. The guest speakers include Tibetan Buddhist Lama Jangchub, Vipassana meditation teacher John Murray, and yoga instructor Collin Waye. Also as part of the seminar, CBU Counsellor Helen Luedee will talk about mental wellness and its importance. The seminar will have sessions of yoga, meditation and chanting of Buddhist and Hindu mantras like ‘Om Namah Shivaay’.
The seminar will take place in the Multipurpose Room and will start at 10 am. Participants will have to wear comfortable clothes and are encouraged to bring a yoga mat. One interesting thing about this seminar is that they will be distributing mala and bead bracelets which is a rare sight in Canada. The people who wish to join the seminar can visit the event page and register themselves for free. The seminar will also be accepting donations at the door. A free lunch will be provided along with water, tea, coffee, and cookies.
