For many first-year students, going to a university away from home and living on residence for the first time is both a thrilling and terrifying experience. It’s a chance to make new friends and learn who you are as a person. Your first week can be bittersweet as you say goodbye to your family and friends back home and take your first steps toward your university career. It can be the week that sets the tone for your entire year. With that in mind, universities across the country put together frosh week activities in the hopes that this week, full of fun ice breakers, gives incoming students the chance make new friends and give them the best start to this new chapter in their lives. This year at CBU we have an action packed week that started this past Saturday and will go all the way to the end of CaperCon on Sunday. First-year students will have a lot to keep them busy in the coming days, and it all started with one of the most important days of all – move-in day.
This year move-in day kicked off at 9:00 am with the arrival of on-campus first-year students. Pretty soon, parents and students alike were unloading cars and beginning the seemingly unending process of unpacking and organizing the rooms where they will live for the next nine months. As the residences began filling up and the teary-eyed goodbyes began, frosh leaders started setting up what would be a busy but fun filled day.
After parent orientation, students were treated to a barbeque as well as some activities and games aimed at getting them out and making new friends. In the evening, students held a bonfire and had a marshmallow throwing competition as well as other fun activities.
For many students, moving away from home can be a big first step into being an independent adult. And while for some moving away from home can be a melancholy experience, Riley Hill, a first-year bachelor of arts student from Cheticamp, is looking at living on residence in a positive light, “I look forward to having my own room,” he said laughing.
When asked for any advice she would give incoming students about frosh week, Logan Sampson, this year’s House Council president said, “Get out and enjoy it. Frosh week is where you’re going to meet a lot of people. The more people you meet, the more connections you’re going to make, and the better your year will be!”
Frosh week will continue until Sunday with lots of activities such as comedy night and a hypnotist at The Pit, a food truck festival Thursday through Sunday in the parking lot, and Orange Out, Friday night at The Pit. As well, the first annual CaperCon will take place this weekend starting Friday at 3:00 pm. Check out the frosh week schedule on the first page for more events!
